Around 80% of people will experience back pain at some stage in their life. For some, chronic back pain or long-term back pain can have a major effect on their lifestyle. Back pain can often affect your ability to perform even the simplest daily tasks.

Numerous structures in your back can cause pain; muscles, nerves, ligaments, discs and bone could all contribute to your back pain, which is often experienced as a deep aching feeling in the lower back and is commonly exaggerated by movement or maintaining the same position for a prolonged period.

Types of Lower Back Pain

  • Acute Back Pain - sudden occurrence of pain, sometimes as a result of trauma. This means any combination of bending, heavy lifting or twisting in a way that accidentally causes stress to the muscles, ligaments or joints of the back. Annoyingly, acute back pain can also develop without any apparent cause and be just as painful.

  • Chronic Back Pain - persistent pain over a prolonged period of time. This is usually as a result of repetitive motions (RSI) or movement compensations that put stress on the back and its related structures.

  • Sciatica - True Sciatica is pain starting in the lower back and buttock extending in a very localised fashion all the way to the foot. It is often described as an intense and unrelenting pain. Sciatica is by far the most commonly misdiagnosed condition we see at ReachHealth. Read more here.

At ReachHealth, our first task is to exclude any major injury as the cause of your pain then identify which structures are involved and promote the body’s journey to recovery.

Don’t put up with the pain anymore. Let the experienced team at ReachHealth improve your quality of life. Book an appointment for professional advice and treatment.

Are you experiencing pain extending from your buttocks into your thighs and right down to your feet?

This presentation of pain is often called sciatica. However, did you know that Sciatica is the most commonly misdiagnosed form of pain?

Sciatic pain can present in two different forms, the long-term effects and treatment of the two vary dramatically. Initial symptoms appear very much the same, with only a trained eye being able to see the subtle difference between them.

At ReachHealth we know we need to dig a little deeper to establish what’s really going on, specifically is this TRUE or FALSE sciatica?

TRUE sciatica is the compression of the sciatic nerve as it exits the spinal canal. Whilst many people have had it suggested to them that their back pain is true sciatica, it is thankfully quite rare.

What is incredibly common is FALSE sciatica, when the sciatic nerve is being irritated by the many muscles and ligaments along its pathway, rather than by the structures in the spine.

But what if my pain IS true sciatica?

If your pain is truly as a result of the structures in the spine compressing your sciatic nerve, specifically the intervertebral discs, our Osteopaths will test for this and make a plan with you about your next steps.

So the great news is the much more common “version” of Sciatica is very treatable by osteopathy! Book in and let us help you out.

Headaches are very common. In fact, most of us will have had a headache at some time in our life. The two most common headaches people experience are tension-type headaches and migraines.

Although a tension-type headache can be bad and we may call it a migraine, it is very different. A tension-type headache comes from tension built up in the muscles, joints and ligaments around the neck, shoulders, and head. This means that the structures causing the headache can be treated with manual therapy and your headaches can be reduced in frequency and intensity!

A migraine is a scientific phenomenon the medical community is still figuring out. There are a variety of different causes of migraines, which means many different treatments can provide relief. What we do know is that migraines can respond well to manual therapy.

Wondering if you have a migraine?

  • Headache lasting from as little as 4 and as long as 72 hours

  • Pulsating or throbbing pain, often on one side of your head

  • Headache that is increasingly worse when you’re active

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Blurred vision

  • Sensitivity to light and noise

  • Lightheadedness, sometimes followed by fainting

Come in to find out more about why you’re experiencing headaches and how we can help!

conditions-neck-pain.png

Neck pain affects up to 20% of adults every year!

Neck Pain results from stress in the muscles, ligaments, and nerves, as well as in the bone and the joints of the spine. The most common causes that we diagnose and treat are muscle and joint irregularities from injury or prolonged wear and tear. In many people, these issues can be addressed with manual therapy, changes to posture at work and exercises.

Another cause of neck pain is whiplash. Whiplash arises from a sudden forward and backward or side to side movement of the head. These are often associated with motor vehicle accidents but can happen in other ways, eg: contact sport or falls.

Our trained osteopaths can help determine what is causing you neck pain and help get you on the road to recovery. Come and see us!

The hip joint is the largest joint of the human body. It is a ball in socket joint with both ball and socket lined with cartilage. These joints transmit the force of gravity and our muscles from the spine into the legs and allows us to walk, run and if you’re a baby, crawl. As it has such a big role in day-to-day life, it often can be a source of pain impacting up to 40% of people.

Hip pain can refer from the groin or lower back, interestingly often the cause of the pain isn’t from the hip itself. Finding the true cause or source of the hip pain is important for long term recovery and prevention of recurrence.

Hip pain can also cause a range of issues like a limp, morning stiffness and reduced function. These presentations of hip pain can be there to protect you but sometimes, they stick around too long and cause ongoing pain or restriction. So if you have hip pain be sure to get it checked out by our trained Osteopaths to prevent future issues.

Hip conditions/injuries that we can treat:

  • Muscle strains

  • Bursitis

  • Osteoarthritis

  • GTPS

  • SIJ dysfunction

  • Piriformis syndrome

  • Lower back referral

The knee, ankle and foot are closely related with tendons and muscles running through all three areas. Not only do these parts of the leg have to help move, but also reduce impact and protect your body. The complex nature of the relationships between these joints is important to movement and when something goes wrong, it can be painful and stop you in your tracks.

Knee pain can come from ligament or cartilage damage, especially from high impact sports. It can also very commonly come from tightness in one of the many muscles that act over the joint.

Ankle and foot pain rarely stays in the joints and can move into the Achilles, calves and the Plantar Fascia. Treating all three areas is important to ensure no stone is left unturned when figuring out how this happened and ensuring it doesn’t happen again.

Common conditions of the lower limb that we treat include:

  • Ligament strain

  • Osgood Schlatter’s

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Muscle strain

  • Rolled ankles

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Dislocations

  • Plantar fasciitis
